I had a passport previously, but it expired a few years ago. I made an appointment at the USPS for Feb 18, which was plenty of time before my travel date in early July. I was told at my appointment that the document I have been using as my birth certificate for my entire life (including for my original passport and my federal government background check) wasn’t really a birth certificate. So I contacted the town clerk where I was born, had a new birth certificate sent to me, and scheduled a new appointment at a USPS for March 27. My trip was (barely) still within the 13 week maximum estimate for passport delivery so I didn’t think the expedited processing was needed. I started getting nervous as my trip approached, and I contacted my congressional representative on June 23. They offered me the option of paying for the expedited processing and overnight delivery at that point. I did so and received the passport on June 30.

I bought both a passport book and passport card, and I requested expedited service. My card arrived about 3 days after the book did. I signed up for email notifications of any status changes, but I did not receive any emails. When I checked the State Dept site just now, a month after my new passport arrived, the status box said that I had been approved and they are now preparing my documents for mailing, lol. If I had to choose between getting my docs and getting status updates, I’m glad I got the docs!

6/9 – Mailed out application for passport renewal and name change. Paid for it to be expedited and paid in advance for it to be sent as priority mail both ways.

6/12 – Received by the passport center, check cashed, and status marked as “In Process”. Expected in 7-9 weeks.

7/18 – Status changed to “Approved”.

7/20 – Due to arrive to me via priority mail.

8/8 – Date of travel.

Note: I never received any emails, despite signing up for email updates.

I did not list my expected travel plans on the application since they were not finalized at the time that I mailed it out.

Overall, the process was easy, but would have become super stressful if it took as long as the expected wait time. It seems that the wait time is easing up now and not nearly as bad as it was for those who applied March through May.

Called Friday 7/7 (75 mins wait) and was told to call back Monday to fall under the 14 days rule
Called Monday 7/10/2023; system was so busy and did not let me through.

Contacted Congressman 7/10 and received a reply same day that they contacted the agency to add it to the congressional pile.

Called Tuesday 7/11 (60-70 mins wait) got through and was told my file is in NC. Person said will send an email to stamp it urgent since I’m traveling 7/21.

Called Friday 7/14 (80 mins wait) and was told it’s been approved and being printed.
Tracking changed to approved then shipped 7/14 and tracking number provided.

Package was not picked up by UPS next day service until Monday 7-17

Passport delivered Tuesday 7/18

Advice: start calling two weeks before and contact your congress person. There is a congressional process and my congressman even had a link on their website for (passport help).

Around the 11 week mark i started to get worried. Especially being that some of my family members who applied after me had received theirs. Our trip date was 7/31 and fast approaching. At the start of the 13th week and my status still only saying received. I contacted my congressman and an investigation was launched. The next day i had an approved status and then 2 days later it was shipped and i received in 1 business day.
