I hate to say it, but this is an example of how the federal government ought to work. Promise 28-42 days and deliver in 17. Perhaps the Passport bureau in Dept. of State should be teaching other parts of the federal government instead of hiring a billionaire to force efficiency with a chainsaw.

December 11, 2024: The U.S. Department of State Passport Services received my application.

December 17, 2024: My passport was approved.
December 18, 2024: Status changed to “Back in Process.”
January 2, 2025 (2 PM): Approved again.
January 2, 2025 (4 PM): Back in Process once more.
January 22, 2025 (4 PM): Approved for the third time.
January 22, 2025 (8 PM): Back in Process again.
February 11, 2025: I contacted the passport hotline for the fourth time. I was told the same thing: it was still in process, and I just had to wait. I was also offered to pay for 2-day shipping again, even though I had already paid for it with the original application. The agent couldn’t see my original payment, so I ended up paying again. Frustrated, I decided to reach out to my congressman’s office for help.
February 11, 2025 (12PM): I contacted my congressman’s office and submitted all the relevant information. They got back to me within two hours after speaking with the Dallas passport office. They apologized on behalf of the passport office and assured me it would be printed either that day or the next, and sent out immediately.
February 12, 2025 (12 PM): Received an email that my passport had been approved for the fourth time.
February 12, 2025 (2 PM): Finally got my tracking number.
February 14, 2025 (1 PM): Passport in hand!
For anyone reading this in the future, don’t despair if you’re stuck in a similar situation. This was supposed to take 4-6 weeks for a routine passport and ended up taking 9 weeks while so many people were reporting to get theirs in 5 days or 7 days. For some reason mine was never going into print and shipping. In the worst-case scenario, reaching out to your congressman can help speed up the process if you’ve been waiting longer than usual. It’s a service they offer to their district constituents.
